Ashlee Inscoe is an intersex, trans woman currently incarcerated at Nash Correctional Institute (NCI), a male facility, in Nashville, NC. NCI staff is neglecting her medical needs. Hear directly from Ashlee:
“My name is Ashlee Inscoe. I am a 42-year-old woman housed at Nash Correctional Institution. I have partial seizures, also known as focal seizures, that started in 2008 after suffering serious injuries from a brutal sexual assault by three men that not only left me hospitalized for several weeks, but also I contracted HIV from it. I’ve had a lot of neurological damage as a result of having seizures and complications with long-term HIV survival. I have had to deal with very painful neuropathy and neuralgia. I have been taking Gabapentin since 2008 and since 2017 in prison in North Carolina. Due to the effectiveness of Gabapentin, which is an anti-convulsant for partial seizures, my seizures have been in remission and the neurological pain kept to a tolerable level. Nash Medical staff, which includes Mark Downs and Jennifer Tilley, discontinued my order on August the 28th, 2023 for the Gabapentin and replaced the seizure medication with Ibuprofen. They lied on their medical reports to the Utilization Review Board in Raleigh and have not sent me to a neurologist. As a result, I have had two seizures since August the 28th, 2023. Both times, they have been reported to Medical by custody staff. Jennifer Tilley, Mark Downs, and Assistant Warden Talena Lee are lying to cover up the fact that I have had seizures due to Nash Medical staff refusing to provide me with adequate medical care and it’s out of spite, hatred, and retaliation.”
Special thanks to Ashlee’s core team NC Trans Mutual Aid, her lawyer Elizabeth Simpson and Cierra Cobb from Emancipate NC, Poetic Justice, including Chasyn Carter and Hausson Byrd.
